After reading chapter 7 of Great Gatsby, I think Daisy and Tom will end up together no matter what. They both highly value money and status which they are able to get in their relationship. Though they may not be truly in love and obviously have their many flaws within their relationship, the importance of reputation and wealth to them is bigger.
Even when Gatsby and Daisy reunite, their “spark” is cut short and we see their dynamic when issues arise. For example, when Tom was talking badly about Gatsby, how his parties are shallow and how he’s a bootlegger, it is clear that Daisy begins to pull away. Another example of this is when Myrtle dies. They just go back to their home and act like nothing happened and end up fine. Even though Daisy has ended a life and potentially Gatsby’s if he is found guilty, she remains untouched. Ultimately, when Gatsby reputation starts to get unclear or questioned, Daisy instantly goes back to Tom. I think for Daisy, Tom is the safe and secure option, whereas being with Gatsby is risky.
Comparatively, Tom and Daisy’s relationship is usually distant and he doesn’t see to really care about her. However, when Gatsby comes in the picture he feels threatened and only then he starts to fight for Daisy and say that their love is bigger to try and ruin Gatsby’s confidence for thinking he could ever be with Daisy. In my opinion, Tom’s intentions aren’t pure, he just wants to use his relationship with Daisy to keep the “perfect, rich, famous” couple for showing off to society. Losing Daisy would mean losing that title.
Overall, their actions have been selfish and shallow, but they will always end up choosing eachother in the end because it is the easier and more beneficial option.
You make a great point about Tom and Daisy valuing money and status over love. I like how you showed that Daisy chooses comfort and reputation instead of taking risks with Gatsby, it really sums up how shallow their relationship is.
