Great Gatsby Fanfic Recreation - Car Crash

I could tell by the look on Tom’s face how bothered he was. Daisy was slowly slipping away from him; he couldn’t stand it. We all were driving back from the horrendous encounter at the city, where all feelings were confessed. Daisy sat silent, with Gatsby and Jordan. I look to the side at Tom, who was gripping the steering wheel firmly, and practically flying down the highway.

“Maybe you should slow down, old sport.” Gatsby suggests.

This prompted Tom to push harder on the gas, violently tearing past the Valley of Ashes. Moments later, a figure of a woman suddenly came out into the road- arms held up high and screaming. Tom’s eyes widened and before he could blink the car had stopped, whipping us all to the front of our seats. The sound of the car hitting the body was like a gunshot.

“Tom- Oh my God! Why didn’t you slow down?” she cried out.

Tom, blankly staring on the dash of the car, pale as a ghost. “I didn’t see her. She came out of nowhere.”,  he replies with a monotone voice.

As the only sane people in this car, me and Jordan run out to go check and see if the person is okay.

"Myrtle?!"

I can tell they heard us from the car, because the indistinct chatter had stopped and the silence of the night filled the atmosphere. Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby all exit the car with a look of utter panic on their face. Jordan is frantically pressing buttons on her phone to call for help.

Gatsby holds onto Daisy, who has a look of shock and slight disgust towards Tom.

"You killed her.." Daisy says.

"It was an accident!"

"That doesn't make it okay! You should have slowed down!"

The sirens wailed in the distance, getting louder and louder. For the first time, Tom Buchanan looked afraid.

When the police arrived, it was unreal. Everyone's face had a look of impending doom, as if all of our lives were about to end right then and there. When they asked who was driving, no one replied.

"Tom Buchanan", Gatsby pointed.

Tom didn't say anything, and Jordan who was still looking at Myrtle's body, had to be told by the officer to step away. An ambulance came by shortly after as well.

"Hands behind your back", an officer says firmly.

"Sir, please, this is a misunderstanding. She practically ran in front of the car. There was nothing I could have done", Tom rambles.

The cop continues to handcuff him and put him into the police car. I try to comfort Jordan, but she remains in a state of shock. Daisy on the other hand, is more upset than shocked. Gatsby was traumatized, but even then, he had almost a look of relief seeing Tom go into the cop car.

More questioning by the cops occur, to which there is nothing we could say that would help Tom's case. At the end of the night, I take Jordan home, and Gatsby takes Daisy home.

As the sun rose, Daisy was sitting on the steps of Gatsby's mansion. She looked at Gatsby differently this time. Not like he was a person from the past, but someone who she shares a connection with,

"Your life doesn't have to be over, Daisy." Gatsby says to her.

"I thought after Tom, it would be. But maybe it isn't." She replies.

With that, the green light across the bay glowed and it was visible. It was no longer far away, it was in reach.

Gatsby and Daisy started a new life together, traveling the world. It was clear that Daisy was happier now; real laughter, memories, and connections. And so was Gatsby, finally getting what he yearned so long for.
